Break Loose Force and Glide Force Testing
In the medical device and pharmaceutical packaging industries, the reliability and ease of use of hypodermic syringes are critical to safety and user experience. Among the most vital performance metrics is the force required to operate the syringe piston, commonly known as break loose force and glide force. These forces ensure smooth operation during injection or fluid extraction and are essential for both user comfort and patient safety.
På Cellinstrument, we provide advanced solutions such as the SSR-01 Syringe Sliding Resistance Tester, specifically designed to measure these operational forces with high precision. Understanding and accurately testing break loose force and glide force not only ensures quality but also supports compliance with global standards such as ISO 7886-1.
ISO 7886-1 - Break Loose Force and Glide Force Testing
ISO 7886-1, titled Sterile hypodermic syringes for single use – Part 1: Syringes for manual use, provides guidelines to evaluate syringe performance. Bilaga E of this standard outlines the ISO 7886-1 testing method for measuring the force required to move the plunger inside a syringe barrel.
This method uses a mechanical testing device to:
- Spela in bryta loss kraft—the initial force needed to overcome static friction and start plunger movement.
- Spela in glidkraft—the average force required to sustain plunger movement throughout the stroke.
These values are crucial. If the break loose force is too high, it can lead to jerky motion; if the glide force fluctuates, it compromises dosing accuracy and control.
Testing Principle and Procedure
——According to ISO 7886-1 Annex E
The test is conducted using a mechanical testing machine that depresses the syringe plunger at a controlled rate, while continuously recording the force required to operate it. The process involves the following steps:
- Förberedelse: The syringe is filled with distilled water at 23 ± 5°C and mounted horizontally. The nozzle is connected to tubing and a reservoir as shown in ISO 7886-1 Annex E’s Figure E.1.
- Actuation: The machine depresses the plunger at 100 ± 5 mm/min, and data is recorded until 10% of the nominal syringe volume remains.
- Kraftmätning: The system logs:
- Break loose force (fs) – force needed to initiate movement.
- Mean glide force (F) – average force during plunger travel.
- Maximum glide force (Fmax) – highest force recorded during travel.
This method ensures precise, repeatable testing, simulating real-world usage conditions.
